This Traditional Bannock Bread is a True Taste of Tradition!

A beloved Scottish classic, this versatile bannock recipe combines the simple staples of flour, baking powder, and salt with your choice of dried fruits, creating a satisfying bread that's both filling and flavourful.

The beauty of these bannock ingredients lies in their simplicity and versatility. The basic dough comes together with just flour, baking powder, salt, and water. The addition of dried fruits like blueberries, sultanas, or cranberries adds bursts of sweetness and texture. Traditionally cooked outside on a griddle or skillet, our version of bannock bread is fried to golden perfection, creating a crispy outside that gives way to insides that are soft, fluffy and completely delicious!

For variations on this classic bannock recipe, consider using different combinations of dried fruits or adding nuts for extra crunch. You could also experiment with whole wheat flour for a nutty flavour, or add a touch of honey for sweetness. Some modern twists on traditional bannock bread include adding herbs or cheese for a savoury version.

Our bannock bread is perfect with butter and jam and a hot cup of tea, and if you’re looking for more Scottish inspiration, how about a classic Scottish pan shortbread, a thick and hearty cullen skink soup, or scrummy Scotch pancakes drizzled with maple syrup!
