What to Eat (and Drink) in London this Week: 3rd August

London’s food scene is showing no signs of slowing down this week, with new riverside openings, exciting pop-ups and plenty of summer tipple spots to add to your list. From Brooklyn-style pizza arriving in King’s Cross to the very legitimate International Beer Day, here’s what’s worth checking out.

Thrift Taco Extends Their Residency

The month is starting on a strong note, with news that Thrift Taco have secured an extension on their residency at Great Beyond through August. If you're yet to visit, the pop-up focuses on cachetada-style tacos, a northern Mexican approach where the emphasis is on exceptional ingredients, such as Wiltshire pork collar and Galician ex-dairy beef. For the meat-free, there's a vegan oyster mushroom pibil taco, all served in heirloom corn tortillas with house-made salsas, and all designed to pair perfectly with a crisp pint.

Coppa Club Opens at London Bridge

Coppa Club has opened its latest London restaurant at London Bridge, taking over one of the capital’s most enviable riverside locations. Set across two floors overlooking the Thames, the all-day dining spot features a wraparound terrace with views towards Tower Bridge, serving everything from harissa-baked Cornish eggs for breakfast, through to fresh pastas for dinner accompanied by a large by-the-glass wine list for dinner.

Hawksmoor's Happy Hour

Hawksmoor’s Martini Terrace at St Pancras is continuing its summer season with a special happy hour until 15th August. Guests can enjoy a selection of signature cocktails for £10, including Grey Goose Martinis, Vespers and Sour Cherry Negronis, at the restaurant’s outdoor terrace overlooking the station. In their own words, "a place to settle in, rather than pass through."

International Beer Day at Godet

Did you know it's International Beer Day this Friday? Now you do. Those who wish to celebrate should head straight to Islington wine pub Godet for its first-ever monthly tap takeover, celebrating the special day on 7 August with a five-beer takeover from Bristol brewery Lost and Grounded Brewers, alongside vinyl DJs from 9pm. Headlining is Party Time Lager, a Latin American-inspired lager brewed with 20% maize in the grist to mark Lost and Grounded's 10th anniversary.

Tasca is Back!

Tasca has returned to East London with a new residency at Project 44 in Shoreditch. Following its successful Bethnal Green pop-up, the Portuguese and Spanish-inspired concept will transform one of East London's busiest neighbourhood cafés into a Southern European-style wine bar, pairing low-intervention wines with produce-led dishes such as Cornish crab on requeijão, Dexter beef tartare al pilpil, and mussel and chorizo rice for sharing.

Hawksmoor x Calfreezy

It's all happening at Hawksmoor this week, and to mark the 20th anniversary celebrations, they have teamed up with burger critic and YouTube star Calfreezy (Callum Airey) to create The Burgurr. The limited-edition bacon double cheeseburger will launch across Hawksmoor restaurants in the UK and Ireland this week, and we're expecting big things.

Brooklyn's Best Pizza Takes Over at The Standard

Over at The Standard, London, Brooklyn favourite Best Pizza will take over the ground-floor bar, Double Standard, from 7 August until 13 September. Expect classic New York-style pies, including Margherita, White Pie and Marinara, alongside a special Soppressata Coppola creation, square pizzas, cocktails and plenty of tiramisu.
