A sea of pink and red has washed over our local corner shops. Every doorway is decked out in last-minute saviours, from greeting cards and sad-looking tulips to stuffed animals wearing heart-adorned t-shirts. Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and whether you consider it a beauty or a burden, it's impossible to ignore. There's no denying it as an opportunity for mass consumerism, but with all marketing racket aside, it throws a blanket of romance on a day that would otherwise be spent shuffling through the 9-5 routine. This year, why not pass on the overpriced bouquets and instead, treat them to a gift they'll really enjoy. We've uncovered one of the most romantic restaurants in London to spend a dreamy evening with a special someone in your life. Introducing RAILS, a culinary escape bringing Parisian charm and French dining to London's centre.
What Makes RAILS One of London's Most Romantic Restaurants?
The Wanderlust Setting
With all of its chaos and commotion, it's easy to overlook the beauty and romance of London's busiest train station. Kings Cross St Pancras is taken for granted as a connecting hub, however this breathtaking station encapsulates the charm of travel- the wanderlust of new visitors amongst the familiarity of daily commuters, each making their way through the entry point into the thriving city of London. RAILS restaurant is nestled above the noise, a quaint escape from the hustle and bustle below. An airy yet intimate space with hints of a Parisian aesthetic, the interiors exude luxury and elegance while the atmosphere maintains a relaxed, welcoming feel. Refined yet vibrant artwork hangs from the walls, softly-lit pendant lights hang from the ceiling. We took a seat at one of the half-moon booths overlooking the grand clocktower, and had an inkling that this under-the-radar gem could just be one of London's most romantic restaurants.
French Dining in London: RAILS Links to Paris
When we think of romantic restaurants for Valentine's Day, 'the city of love' crosses our mind for a reason. Paris boasts a dreamy eatery at every corner but without a Eurostar ticket at our disposal, French dining in London is the next best thing. RAILS pays homage to their links to Paris and the romance of travel with a menu that blends modern British classics with French influence, all with locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients. The first arrival to the table was a platter of fresh bread and butter, as well as toasted gluten-free bread upon request (coeliacs need not worry!). To start, we opted for the Baked Saint-Marcellin which was served with a pot of truffle honey and a grilled baguette. The creamy, oozy cheese had a depth of flavour that paired phenomenally with the sweet drizzle of honey. Combined with a satisfying crunch of fresh baguette, our first dish was nothing short of wonderful. We also opted for the Gin and Tonic Cured Salmon Tartare, an immaculately presented dish that looked almost too good to disrupt. The fresh medley of salmon and cucumber was topped with a buttery crumble, a pairing we didn't expect, but haven't stopped thinking about.
A Wine List to Impress
Romantic restaurants and extensive wine lists go hand-in-hand. From Portugal to New Zealand, RAILS list boasted bottles from all around the world. Keeping in line with French dining, we opted for a chilled rosé from Provence, 'Marie Christine', to pair with our main courses. These were the tuna, grilled to perfection and drizzled in a zesty Chimichurri salsa, and the cannelloni stuffed with, sage, pumpkin, and soft burrata. Our sides of choice were braised red cabbage with a punch of flavour, irresistibly moreish roasted root vegetables, classic French frites, and the RAILS salad, a fresh bed of mixed leaves with cucumber and tomatoes in a balsamic-style dressing. The portions were generous but the food was light and fresh and the wine crisp and dry, so despite the impressive amounts consumed, we left satisfied, not sluggish.
A Bar for Digestifs
Should your date be going exceptionally well, you may not wish for the evening to end once the plates have been cleared. In that case, every romantic restaurant in London and beyond should have an option nearby for the show to continue. Step out of the dining room and into Little Bar, the stylish, intimate bar next door, or head downstairs to GNH Bar, a reinvention of the traditional railway bar with a bustling atmosphere for business matters and cocktail catch-ups alike. Whichever you choose, carry on late into the night with a generous menu of digestifs, cocktails, and wine.
A Valentine's-in-London Special
This Valentine's Day, RAILS has gone a step further and is offering a luxurious menu of three sumptuous courses, including Lobster Gateau, Gnocchi Gratin, and Chargrilled Fillet Steak, with a Campari Granita palate cleanser in between and Passionfruit Bon Bons to finish. Including a glass of Sparkling Rosé to sip on as you enjoy the live jazz, they truly have gone above and beyond to secure the title as London's most romantic restaurant.
From the Parisian accents to the elegant interiors, be transported to a chic bistro in one of London's most central locations. With clock-tower views, seasonal menus of delectable food, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, RAILS offers a remarkable culinary experience that gets Food Network's seal of approval, from start to finish.
