What to Eat (and Drink) in London this Week: 13th July

Looking for somewhere new to eat this week? From Hong Kong-inspired barbecue and handrolls to botanical tasting menus and free gelato, these are the London's food and drink events to add to your diary.

Here's what to eat and drink in London this week: 13th July.

Hon's BBQ opens its first permanent restaurant in Hackney Wick

After building a cult following through a two-year residency, Hon's BBQ is opening its first permanent restaurant this Friday. Founder Man Hon Luk trained in Texas at Michelin-starred InterStellar BBQ before bringing those techniques back to London with a Hong Kong twist. Expect smoked meats cooked low and slow for up to 12 hours, including Sichuan beef short ribs, Asian-spiced ox cheek and lap cheong smoked mac and cheese.

Khao Bird takes over The Culpeper rooftop

This weekend, Michelin Guide-recognised Northern Thai BBQ restaurant Khao Bird and rooftop hotspot The Culpeper are coming together for what could possibly be the takeover of the summer. The sharing menu showcases produce picked straight from the rooftop garden, with dishes including grilled lamb rump with blackened curry, pickled clams with pork fat toast and cucumber with strawberries and fermented soy beans.

Milk Beach returns with a new grown-up concept

After eight years, we were sad to see Milk Beach close its doors on the beautiful street that is Lonsdale Road. However, we come with good news. On Tuesday, the spot will re-open as a wine bar and restaurant for over-21s, called Bar Blondie. The new menu will feature snacks, small plates and fresh pasta. Italian and Provençal inspired, ingredient-led cooking will shine bright with the doors open and tables spilling out onto the mews. It sounds delightful.

Miokuru brings premium handrolls to Soho

If there's one thing Londoners love, it's exclusivity. In knowing this, we presume one of London's smallest sushi restaurants with just 20 seats and a menu championing British produce will be a big hit. Soho's newest addition opens its doors today, and the handrolls filled with Cornish white crab, hand-dived scallop and dry-aged beef tartare sound well-worth queueing for.

Sushi Atelier hosts a one-night Gyoza Party

Love dumplings? On Tuesday, Sushi Atelier is teaming up with Kirin Ichiban in Fitzrovia for an evening dedicated to handmade gyoza. Choose from duck, pork, prawn and vegetable fillings, with every portion served alongside a free half pint of Kirin.

Casual by Tayēr launches a six-week cocktail pop-up

After a fire broke out at Tayēr + Elementary, the team were forced to close their doors. While they wait for an update on when they can re-open their Old Street location, they are finding a temporary solution with a six-week residency at Cato. From the 15th July, expect a brand-new cocktail menu alongside a few fan favourites in the heart of Covent Garden.

The Palomar pops up at Café François

This week, venture outside of Broadgate Circle for your afterwork drinks. From 5pm on Thursday, The Palomar is taking over Borough's Café François for one night only, serving its signature chicken schnitzel alongside live-shucked oysters, Shifka vodka martinis, Palomas and DJ sets. Tickets are £10, including a welcome drink. Why settle for a standing pint when this is an option?

Get free gelato at Kitchen at Holmes

To celebrate Ice Cream Month, Kitchen at Holmes is teaming up with Hackney Gelato to give away 500 free scoops of Hackney Gelato from its Baker Street terrace on Friday. Flavours include Clotted Cream & Strawberry, Pistachio and Alphonso Mango Sorbetto. Friday, 12pm sharp.

Babur celebrates summer with a botanical menu inspired by the Horniman Museum gardens

South London favourite Babur is marking the Horniman Museum and Gardens' 125th anniversary with a limited-edition menu inspired by the museum's botanical gardens. Created after Executive Chef Jiwan Lal toured the gardens with the Horniman's Head of Horticulture, the hyper-local menu showcases herbs and edible flowers throughout, with dishes including crispy filo-coated spiced hung yoghurt kebab with dill oil and tandoori rack of lamb with wild thyme and catmint jus. There's also a floral-inspired cocktail list featuring drinks like the Summer Violet Bloom and Milk & Briar. Starting on Friday, it will be available until the 20th September
