What to Eat (and Drink) in London this Week: 21st September

Brace yourselves, this one’s a long one. Who’d have thought a random week in September would turn out to be one of the most exciting culinary weeks in London so far? This one took us a while to compile, and it's safe to say there’s something to keep you busy for every single day. Get ready, there’s a LOT to eat and drink in London this week.

1. Rogue Sarnies x Hon's BBQ

Cult sandwich joint Rogue Sarnies is teaming up with Hackney Wick's latest addition, Hon's BBQ, on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September. The menu starts with chilli salt corn ribs before moving on to a choice of two sandwiches served on Rogue Sarnies' signature crispy rolls. There's Hon's smoked ox cheek with pickled red onion, chilli slaw and black peppercorn dip, or pork belly with ginger black vinegar glaze, cucumber and pickled daikon. To finish things off, Rogue Sarnies' smashed new potatoes tossed in Hon's honey and black pepper glaze.

Friday is ticketed and comes with a sandwich, while Saturday is walk-in until sold out. A man of many skills, Hon will swap the grill for the decks on Friday, joining DJs Tim Reaper and Deft for a vinyl set.

Friday 25 & Saturday 26 September | Hackney Wick

2. The world's biggest halal food festival

London Stadium will transform into the World Halal Food Festival this weekend. Now in its 13th year, the festival brings more than 150 vendors together, alongside celebrity chefs, live cooking demonstrations, street food, a bazaar and family entertainment. Not a football in sight, just delicious halal food from around the world. Arrive hungry.

Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 September | London Stadium

3. Cafe Kowloon x The Parakeet

The Parakeet is joining forces with Cafe Kowloon for four-hands dinner this Wednesday. Head Chef Ben Allen and Cafe Kowloon's Budgie Montoya will bring together the restaurant's fire-led cooking with bold Cantonese flavours for a seven-course menu. Start with oysters two ways, prawn toast with crispy cockles and laverbread dip, grilled sea bream with spring onion and ginger, and a rather intriguing dessert of French toast, preserved stone fruit and Szechuan honey ice cream. There's a good reason to book even if you can't make the dinner, too: The Parakeet will be serving a Cafe Kowloon guest dish and cocktail on its pub menu until 6 October.

Wednesday 23 September | Kentish Town

4. Get your Negroni fix

Aperol season is over, and autumn is all about the Negroni. This week is bringing the bitter, the boozy and the brilliantly inventive cocktails to bars across London. Whether you're a seasoned Negroni drinker or still deciding if it's an acquired taste, there are plenty of reasons to join in, from £5 serves at venues including The White Horse in Peckham and Coppa Club to creative twists at Young's pubs and Fenchurch Restaurant's truffle-washed mezcal Negroni. With proceeds supporting Slow Food, it's a bar crawl you can feel (slightly) virtuous about. For the full lowdown, head over to our Negroni Week Guide.

5. The team behind Levan opens Cassette

The team behind Levan is heading into central London with its first debut in Covent Garden. Cassette opens its doors on 23 September, taking over a converted townhouse on Maiden Lane with a menu inspired by classic French bistros. On 23 September, the fabulous Palestinian restaurant Akub is joining forces with Mambow for a one-off Dinner for Palestine, bringing Palestinian ingredients and flavours together with Malaysian cooking in a menu exploring fire, chilli, acidity, fermentation, herbs and smoke. Priced at £70, the collaborative dinner at Mambow will raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians, offering an evening of inventive cooking with a meaningful cause at its heart.

7. Covent Garden gets a new rooftop

Here at Food Network, we're suckers for a rooftop restaurant, and this new opening promises more than just city views. Nettle opens on the roof of The Conduit on 22 September, with chef Will Devlin leading the kitchen. A custom grill will be at the centre of the restaurant, with fire-led dishes such as Kent lamb chops, Sussex grass-fed beef and baked hake. With panoramic views across London and a menu built around seasonal British produce, Nettle looks set to become a new destination for autumn.

8. Chiswick gets a new neighbourhood restaurant

As you can guess from our rave review, we were sad to see The Silver Birch go. However, we're happy to announce that the Chiswick restaurant is reopening as Brook & Green on 24 September, with the same owners giving the space a new identity as a neighbourhood wine bar and restaurant. The menu will take inspiration from Mediterranean, Asian and British cooking, while downstairs becomes a wine bar serving glasses alongside small plates. Chicken schnitzel, slow-cooked lamb and wine by the glass? We'll take it.

Opening 24 September | Chiswick

9. It's Bagels comes to Hampstead

Widely known as London's best bagels, It's Bagels is gearing up for its latest opening this Saturday. Hampstead locals will be delighted to hear that their neighbourhood is the latest to be blessed with signature New York-style hand-rolled bagels, schmears, lox, and loaded sandwiches. If they're good enough for The New York Times, they're good enough for us. Plus, this location is said to have seating too!

10. Lilibet’s celebrates its first anniversary with tuna, and lots of it

Enter The Lilibet’s Tunny Club, an entire week dedicated to the resurgence and sustainable sourcing of British bluefin tuna (historically known as tunny). A menu of inventive dishes is in store, featuring limited-edition, fin-to-tail dishes that showcase every part of the fish, from hay-grilled tuna belly to tuna-wrapped oysters with caviar. The tuna takeover runs alongside the restaurant’s à la carte menu, so think of it as an added extra to an already tempting reason to visit.

21–27 September | Mayfair

11. The Camberwell Arms welcomes Lyaness for its Allocation series

The Camberwell Arms is welcoming Ryan Chetiyawardana and the Lyaness team for the second instalment of its Allocation series, bringing together two teams for an evening of creative cocktails and generous pub snacks. For £15, guests can enjoy a welcome cocktail and bites including pork saltimbocca and devilled mussels, with signature cocktails from both teams available for £10. A rather good excuse to head south for a drink or two.

No Saturday plans? No holiday on the horizon? We have just the solution for both. 13. Fitzrovia Food Festival Takes Over the Neighbourhood

The glorious use of alliteration aside, Fitzrovia is turning into one big dining destination for the Fitzrovia Food Festival, with more than 30 restaurants, bars, cafés and pubs offering exclusive deals for one week only. Expect everything from 20% off at ROKA and Brasserie Angelica to complimentary cocktails at ROVI and 50% off food at Pahli Hill, alongside special set menus and plenty more. It’s a chance to eat your way around the world without leaving Fitzrovia.

Last but certainly not least, Aulis London is bringing back its 20/20/20 charity dinner, a night which brings together 20 chefs for a 20-course feast, with all proceeds going to Hospitality Action. The impressive line-up brings together some of the UK's top culinary talent, including chefs behind Michelin-starred restaurants Emily Roux (Caractère), Endo Kazutoshi, James Knappett, Alex Bond, Paul Foster and Andy Beynon, alongside Sabrina Ghayour and more.
