Does Almond Milk Go Bad?

Whether you're new to almond milk, or have been using it in your morning lattes or cereal bowls for a long time, it's important to learn how to keep it fresh before and after you open the container. For more info, we consulted Dana Angelo White, a cookbook author, registered dietitian nutritionist and certified athletic trainer.

How to Store Almond Milk

Almond milk should be stored in the refrigerator. “Once the container seal has been opened and the almond milk has been exposed to air, you should use it within about 10 days,” White says. “Some brands of almond milk come from the refrigerated section of the supermarket, and those should remain in cold storage. Once opened, those should also be used within 10 days.”

How Long Does Almond Milk Last?

Once opened, store-bought almond milk lasts for up to 10 days when kept in the refrigerator. Homemade almond milk perishes more quickly. “It will separate when it sits for a few hours. Give it shake and it’s good as new, but I would use homemade almond milk within 3 days,” White says.

What to Know About Almond Milk’s Expiration Date

As with other “best by” labels, White says that expiration dates on almond milk labels are suggestions to ensure quality, and are not indicators of spoilage.

What Does Almond Milk Look Like When It’s Gone Bad?

Almond milk can go bad or rancid. “Signs of spoilage include discolouration or foul odour. It can get lumpy or develop specs of mould,” White says. “Bottom line: when in doubt, toss it!”

Can You Freeze Almond Milk?

Technically, you can freeze almond milk, but White says that most brands advise against it. Freezing almond milk can cause it to separate, altering its consistency. “It can be done, but perhaps it’s best if the frozen product can be directly incorporated into smoothies,” she says.
